Artist Statement I have had a long career as a non-profit entrepreneur, working in the creative side of universities and museums. That meant my voice and vision were always in harness to a larger mission. Now as an independent creative being, I paint in oils, and occasionally, when I travel, in watercolors. Writing and painting seem to me to feed each other, opening me to see the world simultaneously in light and metaphor. I paint what pleases me and try to capture some of the essence of the subject that seized me initially. Most of my paintings are of things and places I love and am moved by. I spent much of my career working in aspects of history and now I find that many of my paintings have personal historical references. My Maine paintings are of a deeply felt home that I have been going to for more than sixty years. My Breton paintings are of a very close friend’s home I have been visiting for forty years. I paint the places of my heart and my history.
