Eco-printing is the art of printing with leaves, flowers, and other plant materials, using a process that is unpredictable and often seems like magic. I use eco-printing on fabric to create materials for abstract fabric collage and other fabric creations. For JP Open Studios I have made eco-printed scarves of silk or wool, and tiny eco-printed paper books that can be displayed as art and used as journals and note cards. I am enchanted with the beauty, excitement, and mystery of eco-printing. I never know exactly how a particular effort will turn out; plants share their colors differently depending on the season they are harvested, whether they grew in more sun or more shade, whether they got enough water as they grew, the weather, and many other influences, only some of them known to eco-printers. Eco-printing feels to me like a cooperative activity with the plants—I provide a process and a medium and the plants give me the gift of their shapes and pigments. It is a lovely collaboration that has given me a more intimate relationship with the natural world. At open studios this year, in addition to my recent eco-printed work, I will show my hand-knitted wire sculptures and vessels made of fabric and of felt.
