The paintings that I am showing represent two ongoing series of work that I began about two years ago. I go back and forth between these distinct styles, as they both satisfy my need to express the poetic and romantic aspects of landscape, as well as the more abstract and symbolic themes using metal leaf. I enjoy working with metal leaf because it gives the paintings an underlying luminosity that glows despite the amount of light in the room. These paintings therefore, are always changing depending upon the light in which they are seen. This quality of radiance is a primary focus in my work, as is the sun symbol, which I see as an image of spirit that infuses and animates all living things. The landscapes in this exhibit express my joy remembering scenes from various places in the US and in Europe that have inspired me over the years. In many cases I have used three dimensional acrylics and have found that light has more surfaces to bounce off of, giving th paintings a subtle degree of luminosity. My appreciation for trees is seen in both my abstract and landscape work, as symbolic expressions of the human yearning to unfold, bloosom, and reach towards the sun. Iris Anne Grant Summer 2012
